Repetition

I rummaged through my fabrics to find ones I had previously dyed and chose a light orange, yellow and green shibori. The markings were too subtle to show much, after a dip into indigo, but the fabric is a now pleasing green with good value contrast. Then I overdyed a turquoise and white cotton in the indigo and am pleased with the markings, although I find the colour of this one less appealing.

And I thought this black and white fabric might be interesting to dip - but the moon hardly shows.

I also did a turquoise and fushia to see how indigo looks over something fairly bright and dark - and got a fushia moon in blue that has limited value differences. Two of my vats weren't giving colour, so I had to do some adjusting. Each new skill takes alot of experimenting and experience to get to a point where I can get the results I am after - which makes me especially grateful for any gifts from the dye Goddess!

Taking it Further

I am continuing to experiment with overdyeing in the indigo vats and I love this moon over the water: And this night sky reflection:

I suspect nothing is going to be safe from the vats, soon! Here is a previously bark dyed honeycomb where the indigo turns green.

And this swiss dot reminds me of snow falling from the clouds:

No snow today - but we have been having such strong winds, and I saw branches everywhere and several downed trees when I was outside:

Break time is over and I'm going back to the vats...

Mixing it Up

I dipped down into the indigo vats again today, this time overdyeing some leaf prints on silk

and cotton.

With the pile of blues rising up, I couldn't resist a little play time with a few,

including some pops of warmer colours like those in the gardens around here.

Hunting Colour

Today I was interested in seeing if I could dye a brighter turquoise with indigo. Two of my vats were spent, but two were working, so I dipped silk satin swatches and got turquoise the first try! I wondered if maybe I could dye cotton of a similar colour and tried, but without success other than in the lightest dips. This was my last blue dip of the day and while I did have some linen that went in afterwards, the vat was no longer giving colour. It reminds me of a frosty winter scene.

And yesterday I popped this silk velvet that was a cream and yellow from previous leaf dyeing I had done, into the vat:

Now I will see if I can get those three spent vats going again - or maybe make up another kind.

Saturation Point

Today I focused on leaving the fabrics in the indigo for a longer time period, and most did come out darker. This silk velvet spent one hour in the bath. And this is cotton - also one hour.

And some trim and silk organza - which remained a turquoise in spite of being longer in the bath.

And overdyeing with indigo - on a piece I had previously dyed green, just to see what would happen.

I am learning something with each dip and I can also try successive dips with one fabric, to see how that works to darken the colour.
